Went in to grab a bag of Asiago bagels Saturday morning and there weren’t any as usual. I went to the bakery counter and said “excuse me” to the guy standing there. He pretended not to hear me and continued talking to himself as he disappeared into the back room. I waited for him to come back but he was visibly annoyed that I was still there, huffed and threw up his hands as if to say “what do you want?!” When I came back with the district manager he didn’t have much to say about it and wouldn’t look at me. I barely got an apology from the district manager for daring to interrupt her. This is the level of customer service I expect and have received many other times. Shaw’s hates you and wants you to go away.
For me, Shaw’s is too expensive. Regular prices are .50 to 1.00 and higher priced more than other grocery stores. Therefore, sale priced items are still above, and is not really a sale.
I may not return to this Shaw's store. Although prices are higher than competitors and it's chronically understaffed, I shop at Shaw's for a few hard-to-find items, and a handful of weekly sale items on super-sale, often with digital coupons. These are great bargains -- IF you use their online coupon app. I don't have a working smartphone, so Shaw's helpful cashiers usually adjust those items down to the advertised digital-coupon sale price for me. It took a minute to do, but it was never a problem... until this weekend. This weekend, the cashier got a manager I'd never seen before, who said they haven't done that in months, which is a bald-faced lie. Instead, I'd need to set up an account online, clip the coupons online, and then come back to do all my shopping again. I'm disabled. I already spent all my energy that I had left for that evening and half the next day, trekking back and forth across his understaffed store for over an hour, locating and gathering all the sale items I needed for a nice holiday dinner. Instead of adjusting the sale item prices like usual, this manager helped me go through my cart and pull out half my order to return to shelf, because it was mostly digital coupon items, where I needed the app or an account. Then I realized that we had just removed most of my holiday brunch and dinner from my cart, so there was no reason to keep the impulse purchases I'd added to round out my holiday. So I removed another quarter of my order, and gave that back to him as well. All in all, I believe he helped me unload about $50 to $100 of food from my cart, and inspired me to write this lovely review about his store. And to shop elsewhere. The next day, I bought my holiday dinner at a more agreeable grocery store chain. Falmouth businesses seem to have an attitude toward anybody who's not rich. This is a lousy attitude in its own right, but in a state that still has an awful lot of people who are Not-rich living here year-round, it seems a poor business decision. For the record, the manager did start to look a little chagrined as he took back my holiday roast, vegetables, and fruits, and watched me purchase what was left with EBT /SNAP. But his chagrin does not give me back my holiday dinner, nor my hours and energy wasted going through sale flyers and limping around his store to collect my cartful of food. It's not just that he wouldn't give me the sale price, it's that he lied and said they hadn't been doing that for months, when they actually have been. Well, now I know! Goodbye, Falmouth Shaw's!
