If you love plants, run, don't walk to the Lyman Estate Greenhouse! What an amazing little place! They had sooo many things to see in the exhibition portion and even more to see in the for sale portion! They had the most unique variety of houseplants I have seen in a very long time! As someone with over 600 houseplants, it is very difficult to find a place that has something extraordinary or unique anymore, but this place had it. The staff were super mega knowledgeable too! We spent quite a while speaking with her. I was today years old when I learned that citrus trees had thorns! I also saw a hoya bloom for the 1st time in my life. I had only ever seen that in photos before today! The plant prices were extremely reasonable. The woman also said they do plant sales most of the summer; orchids, herbs, veggies, you name it! Definitely highly recommend a trip here. You will not be disappointed!
Very small greenhouses. I would only allot about an hour at most. No public bathrooms. Small shop. No interaction with anyone at the greenhouses though there were several people working at the time.
This place is such an absolute treasure! Aimee is a walking encyclopedia! She not only helped me select plants that fit my home and their care, but gave me a history of the greenhouse and it's remarkable range of plants, like she knew every single one of them! PS Glow in the dark petunias! How cool is that?
When Spring is close but still feels distant — in February and March — the great variety of plants, lots of them exotic & lots in bloom, really revives the spirit. And you can bring some home — a selection is for sale. And, of course, the greenhouses are open not just in these times.
Amy in the greenhouse was SUCH a delight! We had many questions about our purchased/personal plants and their care. She was so helpful and patient. We did not realize how much of a resource this greenhouse is. I would definitely recommend visiting this historic site and buying locally grown plants.
