My uncle, who is a senior citizen, went to the UPS drop-off location inside ShopRite to return a large, heavy box. Unfortunately, he had forgotten his phone in the car, which contained the shipping label. He politely explained the situation to the UPS employee and asked if he could leave the box for a moment since it was very heavy, step outside to get his phone, and return immediately. When he came back, instead of handling the situation professionally, the UPS employee became extremely rude and aggressive. She threatened to call the police and actually did so, falsely claiming that a “brown Middle Eastern man” was causing problems. This was both disturbing and unacceptable. The police arrived, listened to my uncle’s explanation, and determined that no wrongdoing had occurred. They left without taking any action. While we understand that policies may not allow customers to leave packages unattended, there is absolutely no justification for harassment, unprofessional behavior, or making such serious and inappropriate claims to law enforcement. This incident was handled in a completely unacceptable manner. It is deeply disappointing that UPS and ShopRite would allow an employee to treat customers—especially senior citizens—in this way. This experience reflects very poorly on both businesses, and I hope management takes this matter seriously and provides proper training and accountability.
What’s with the bags? Sorry I didn’t bring bags and I say that because it’s like I am asking for a ride home. Do you need bags? Yes How many? I don’t know yet. Rolls eyes and places stack of bags in front of me. As I am bagging the cashier goes for the bags and I think cool I will have some help. Nope, bags are going back under the counter for protection or whatever reason they are hidden. So here I am overstuffing low quality paper bags and carrying two cans separately because we must be in a national bag shortage. Meanwhile if I go to Adams not only do they bag for the customer, the bags actually survive without ripping. And I can actually reuse the bags. What happened to grocery cashiers? Now it seems like a race to scan as many things possible in the shortest period of time so they can stare at the customer or their phone as we struggle to get our stuff bagged. But they never forget to ask if I want to donate to a charity so they can look like community heroes when they handed a check over from the money they collected from the customers the same moment as they are bagging. Is there a policy cashiers can no longer bag and they must scan things as fast as they can or is there a incentive to scan as many items in a minute as you can? I’m convinced that it’s just a push to buy these plastic reusable bags so the store can make more money on them.
I am beyond upset by what I witnessed at this UPS location in Montgomery, NY. What happened was disturbing, unnecessary, and deeply discriminatory. While waiting inside, an elderly man who appeared Middle Eastern was simply standing in line like everyone else. He was calm, polite, and not causing any issues whatsoever. Despite this, staff members suddenly called the police on him and claimed he was “trying to steal.” Nothing about his behavior suggested that — he was literally just waiting his turn. The lady was AFRICAN AMERICAN HERSELF!!!! What made this even more shocking was hearing the way he was described to the police, emphasizing his appearance rather than any actual behavior. When the police arrived, they clearly stated that the man was not doing anything wrong and was not a threat. That should tell you everything. Calling the police on an innocent elderly man based solely on how he looks is unacceptable. It was humiliating, frightening, and completely unjustified. The fact that this came from staff who should know better makes it even more disappointing. This was one of the most blatant displays of profiling I have ever witnessed in a public business. No one should be made to feel unsafe or criminalized for simply existing and waiting in line. I will not be returning to this location, and I strongly urge management to address this behavior immediately. Customers deserve to feel safe and respected — not targeted and traumatized.
I would hate to have to say something rude directed at another person but here we are. A certain person at the UPS pick up location needs customer service training. The way I was talked to is unbelievable. I understand people have THOSE days but there is no reason to be a grouch. I just feel bad for the coworkers that have to deal with that all day. I work in retail so I know there’s bad customers, but when approaching you with respect I expect to receive some human decency back. Please take notes for better customer service.
