I am saddened to leave this review because my daughter and I truly enjoy shopping at this store. It is well organized and we particularly like the cheeses and pastries. I also enjoy tasting the wine of the week. However, this past Sunday there was a different employee, a middle-aged White man, sampling the wines. I stopped by the booth, like I usually do, and I was given a sample of the wines. I ended up buying a different bottle that the employee recommended as I was looking for something dryer. I was right behind him (the employee) and still holding the glass of wine when I overheard him offering another customer (a White middle-aged man who was also sampling the wines) a taste of a more expensive bottle of red that he (the employee) was "reserving" for someone he "thought would appreciate it". I approached the booth and the employee ignored me at first. I inquired with curiosity about the wine he was talking about and he told me that he didn't have any more left. The customer, who was offered "the last taste" of the fancy wine, told the employee that he had a "budget for wine". Ironically, I am a regular and I buy wine from Zupan's every month. I also would like to add that I am not a White middle-aged man, I am a petite woman with a foreign accent. I brought this situation to Emily's attention, she is in charge of the wine department and I know this because I sometimes pre-order wine from Zupan's. Emily first assured me it was not about me; however, she suddenly stopped defending the employee when I told her exactly what he said. Zupan's, I think you can do better. Do not underestimate your customers just because you hear a foreign accent.
This is one of the Best markets in Portland. You can get lost in there shopping, theres so many unique and interesting products, including a terrific hot deli section where they have prime rib on Saturdays and lots of goodies to go with it.
Zupan’s Flower Shop is an absolute treasure! From the moment you step inside, you’re surrounded by a stunning selection of fresh blooms, unique branches, and all sorts of artistic elements perfect for floral arranging. The shop is beautifully curated, with fresh stems displayed both inside and out, making it a dream destination for flower enthusiasts. What truly sets this place apart, though, is the incredible staff. The florists here are not only knowledgeable but also passionate about what they do. They take the time to walk you through their selection, offering expert advice on what would make the perfect bouquet. You can tell they love their craft, and their enthusiasm is contagious! I received the most breathtaking bouquet from someone special, and it was beyond anything I could have imagined—massive, elegant, and thoughtfully designed. Every single bloom was something I adored, and it looked like it belonged in a five-star hotel lobby. The attention to detail and artistry were second to none.
One of my favorite specialty grocers for gourmet local and international foods. High quality butters from France, Belgium, and Italy; award-winning olive oils; freshly baked loaves from Ken’s Artisan; and so many great pantry options. However some of the products here are sold at much higher markups than elsewhere.
My favorite grocery store w/ high quality produce & meats. Everything is clean & so pleasing to look at! The deli section selection is divine!! They have deli meats that I’ve tried overseas and fell in love with. Their sweet treats are to die for, however I did not care for the prepared food. Soups are average. Yes it’s pricey but it’s worth it for the quality. Fruit is always so flavorful & fresh as well. So impressed!
