Named after a shepherdess in Greek poetry who loved a shepherd named Alteo
The largest amaryllis bulbs are called "Dutch Master" and can be fist-sized
The flowers we call amaryllis are mostly Hippeastrum species native to South America, particularly Peru and Brazil. Dutch traders brought them to Europe in the 18th century. The name comes from Greek mythology - a shepherdess named Amaryllis pricked her heart to create a red flower to win her love's heart.
