German breeder Georg Arends developed most modern varieties in the early 1900s
Astilbe is native to Asia and North America. German plant breeder Georg Arends (1862-1952) devoted his life to developing astilbe hybrids, creating most of the colorful varieties we grow today. His work earned him the title "father of the astilbe," and Astilbe x arendsii bears his name.
