Native to South Africa, Bird of Paradise was named in honor of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, whose family name was Mecklenburg-Strelitz - hence the botanical name Strelitzia. It was introduced to European gardens in 1773 and has since become one of the worlds most recognized tropical flowers.
